The Ruhr was once the largest industrial region in Europe. There was massive coal mined and steel produced. In the eighties, the decline of the heavy industry was a fact, and most of the mining and steel workers were unemployed. The regional project IBA Emscher Park changed a lot for the Ruhr.

Koolhaas designed a spectacular house that consists of three houses. A deep cave-like, rock-hewn part of the intimate family life, in the middle on the ground floor a glass house half inside and half outside and above that a higher volume which is divided into a home for the parents and one for children.

We searched for and found two reasons to visit Rotterdam again, namely:
The global impact of Rem Koolhaas and OMA AMO on contemporary architecture, urbanism and others is simply impressive.
The restored Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam can also be admired on the inside.


OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) is founded in 1975 by Rem Koolhaas, Elia Zenghelis, Madelon Vriesendorp & Zoe Zenghelis.

The office is led by seven partners: Rem Koolhaas, Ellen van Loon, Reinier de Graaf, Shohei Shigematsu, Iyad Alsaka, David Gianotten and CEO Victor van der Chijs.

(Remment Lucas) Rem Koolhaas (°Rotterdam, 17 november 1944) won the Pritzker Prize in 2000.

Koolhaas studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Koolhaas is the founding partner of OMA, and of its research-oriented counterpart AMO based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 2005, he co-founded Volume Magazine together with Mark Wigley and Ole Bouman
