De Smet Vermeulen

De Smet Vermeulen is a Ghent based architects office founded in 1989 by Henk de Smet and Paul Vermeulen.

Henk De Smet (°Bruges, 1954) graduated in 1979 as an architect at the HSLI Ghent and Brussels. Until 1982 he worked as a technical consultant for non-profit organization PROTOS (Project for Technical Cooperation) for construction projects in Haiti. In 1989 began working with Paul Vermeulen. Since 1993 he has worked at the KU Leuven, where since 2003 he leads the “studio sustainable building” and was appointed in 2006 as professor. In addition, he supervised include the Master Pilot 2007 Kortrijk Team Flemish Government Architect and the workshops Contemporary Architecture and Reconstruction in Flanders for Vai.
 
Paul Vermeulen (Bruges, 1962) graduated in 1985 as ir. architect at the KU Leuven. As a research assistant he conducted later research in Indonesia (Bandung); Thailand (Bangkok) and Algeria (Algiers). In 1989 he began his collaboration with Henk De Smet. He writes about architecture since 1986 and worked from 1996 to 2000 as editor for Archis. During different periods he worked as assistant design practice at the KU Leuven (1991-1995, 2000-2006) and as a teacher, both at the KU Leuven (architecture critic, 1994-2006) and TU Delft (2006-2007, 2008-2014 ). Since 2007 he is member of the Advisory Committee on Architectural Heritage Ostend and since 2011 he is Chairman of the Quality Room Monuments and Architecture, Ghent. He was a juror for various competitions, including the Golden Pyramid (Price of Client Netherlands, 2003) and the competition for the Military Hospital Antwerp organized by Vespa (2005). In 2011 he received the Flemish Community Prize for Architecture (Flemish Cultural Award 2010-11).
