The House of Time project and the Berlin collective raumlabor

House of Time is a long-term project that was started by the German architectural firm raumlabor, in collaboration with local partners such as Bruges (n) for young people and Bolwerk. At an old industrial site along the canal they work together for a year on a house full of time: a place that is reprogrammed and activated, as it were, to a meeting and production place by and for young people. The ‘microfabriek’ will slowly evolve into an open space for exploring, experimenting and learning. Mobile units are assembled, such as a hot water bath or a series of benches, but it is also about immaterial values: feeling involved, engaging in actively solving problems at every moment of the creative process. It is about motivating teenagers to use an urban public place on a permanent basis. raumlabor wants to break through individualism and let local youth, as a community, look for a solution to their social and social problems, through art and architecture. ‘Space is a product of social translation, transformation and experience’ (Henri Lefebvre, sociologist). The German collective talks about the design and evolution of this project on Thursday evening, August 30 on the site of the Pakhuizen.

Lecture by raumlabor

The Berlin collective raumlabor was founded by the architects Markus Bader, Jan Liesgang, Christof Mayer and Andrea Hofmann. Space laboratory, Space laboratory and Collective. The name itself makes it clear that it is not a traditional architectural firm. They work within a playful and alternative style in which socially oriented projects with a great eye for quality of life are set up. All projects are at the interface between architecture and spatial planning and are built from an analysis of the environment and the needs of the users.
For the Triennial Bruges 2018 | Liquid City – Liquid City they develop a project in the historical center of the city, a space for conversation and creation for and by young people. On the initiative of Archipel and the Triennale, the Berlin Architects collective gives a lecture in which the project and the participatory vision of architecture are highlighted, which Raumlabor considers so highly of paramount importance. Their mision statement says:
“yes we do the great ideas of the 60s and the optimism which is inherent in changing the world at the same time, but we strongly believe that complexity is real and more substantial approach, therefore our spacial proposals are small scale and deeply rooted in the local condition … BYE BYE UTOPIA! “_
