Atelier Bow-wow

Architectural Behaviorology: The Work of Atelier Bow-Wow
Lecture by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto at the Asian Art Museum, 2019
Atelier Bow-Wow’s philosophy on architectural behavioral sciences sees design as the relationships between different considerations about different behaviors. It observes different behaviors of three main actors in and around architecture: nature (light, wind, heat, humidity, etc.), man (custom, tradition) and the building (typology, building elements). Design practices based on architectural behavioral science address barriers between people and local resources.

Creating better accessibility to the local resources | Commonalities in Architecture
Lecture by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto in Bozar, Brussels, A + Architecture, 2016
This lecture is also about how architectural design can explore the boundary between people and everyday resources; a boundary created during the industrialization process in twentieth-century society. People, natural elements, materials are discussed as everyday elements from the point of view of the behavioral sciences. The design strategy to obtain better accessibility to such shareable sources reveals similarities in architecture.

On the Past and Future of Architecture
Lecture by Shohei Shigematsu & Atelier Bow-Wow, Japan Society NYC, 2019
Tokyo’s architectural landscape is constantly changing in response to social conditions. The fast approaching Summer Games of 2020 have also been a major boost to the current changes. What is Tokyo’s challenge for architects and what is the fascination of this metropolis? Atelier Bow-Wow initiates a conversation about Tokyo’s changing architectural landscape with Shohei Shigematsu, a partner at OMA and the director of OMA’s New York office.
First, both agencies present their work, followed by a conversation.

Islands and Villages: the post-urban phenomenon | Atelier Bow-Wow in Momono-ura
CCAchannel, 2018
In Japan, architects are looking beyond the city to reinvent their practice. In this documentary series, Kayoko Ota visits some of the rural locations where these experiments take place, and interviews practitioners to understand how this suburban turn can help formulate a new architecture for today.
Atelier Bow-Wow (Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima) work with a comprehensive architectural practice that integrates historical analysis and ethnography with building design and construction. They recently applied this methodology to revive the small fishing village of Momonoura, which was devastated by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. In this video, Tsukamoto and Kaijima talk about how their research in the village has provided them with a new model for interacting with the city, and how their experience running a fishing school has changed their perception of the office one has as an architect.

Working within a dense network of local residents, visiting artists, students and tourists, Sejima directs a series of precise interventions relating to site-specific histories and landscape considerations. In this video, the architect outlines her process, discusses the benefits of working with the ‘smallness’ of the island’s context and explains how her experience with Inujima has opened her eyes to the ability of architects and users to actively the environment around them.

Hiroshi Sambuichi

Sambuichi Interview: Building with Sun, Water and Air
Travel through an enchanting sea of light and darkness, orchestrated by Japanese architect Hiroshi Sambuichi. Here he shares his thoughts behind the miraculous water and light installation in an old underground water reservoir in Denmark.

Hiroshi Sambuichi was interviewed by Christian Lund in March 2017 in connection with his installation “The Water” at the Cisterns in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Sambuichi Interview: One with the Earth’s Cycle
“Architecture must thrive like a plant.” Gain insight into the philosophy of a forerunner in sustainable architecture, Japanese architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, and hear how he created some of his unique site-specific buildings.

As a child, Sambuichi lived close to nature, on the Seto Inland Sea, and feels that this proximity developed his love for the water, the wind and the sun – elements that are crucial in his work.
When he was to build the Rokkō Shidare Observatory (at an altitude of 1,000 meters, making it the tallest of all his buildings) on the top of Mount Rokkō in Kobe, Japan, Sambuichi spent a year studying the different water conditions.
He reviews the Rokkō Shidare Observatory, the Seirensho Art Museum at Inujima, the Naoshima Hall, Orizuru Towers.

Portrait of Hiroshi Sambuichi, Laureate of The Daylight Award 2018 for Daylight in Architecture
Hiroshi Sambuichi is a master of balancing the relationship between nature and architecture. The movement of earth, wind, air, water and sun are an integral part of his buildings, including the Shizuki Castle House and Naoshima Hall in Japan. As such, its buildings exist in harmony with their environment.
His approach ensures that daylight is always present in his variable life. It does not objectify light as a unique event, but rather opens our consciousness and experience of light to be timeless, fluid and rich.

TIJDELIJKE OPPORTUNITEITEN

Urbanized (2011) – Gary Hustwit

Jef Cornelis – OMA: Rem Koolhaas
