In between

An experience + New Year's reception
Saturday
24.01
14:30

In collaboration with:

With the support of:

Archipel will open the 2026 working year in the new BRUSK, before the first exhibition there
has started. We will experience the building in a rare state of in between – still empty of art, full of anticipation for what will be created within those spaces.

Femke den Hollander

On the other hand, BRUSK is already connected with the centuries-old city around it.
A contemporary building among historic houses, creating new walking routes within the old city fabric, new views and places to rest: BRUSK is becoming part of the city.

We invited three guides to activate this space with us: musician Shoko Igarashi, artist David Bergé and author Peter Verhelst. With them, we will immerse ourselves in the experience of this moment.

You are cordially invited on Saturday 24 January from 14:30-18:00 to come and experience ‘in between’ inspired by the Japanese concept of MA, in and around the new BRUSK building. We will look, listen, move and connect in and between the spaces of the building. We will immerse ourselves in the experience of this building as an environment, at a special moment, just before it is put into use as a museum, in the company of:

Shoko Igarashi
The Japanese saxophonist who has been making her mark on the Belgian jazz scene since 2018. Drawing on a deep knowledge of traditions – both in Japanese and American jazz – and a curious, exploratory approach to playing different instruments, she will show us relationships between space and sound.

David Bergé
In David Bergé’s work, the audience participates – via hybrid and post-digital formats – in a journey through time-based works, installations and book-formats. David Bergé is best known for his Walk Pieces, guided walks in silence inviting participants to focus on the material, climatic and political conditions of built environments.

Peter Verhelst
The Bruges poet, novelist and theatre maker Peter Verhelst sets up a horizontal altar of cherished objects for us and places himself in the middle of it. At eye level, he tells us about the relationships that can arise in space.

Expect an immersive experience, an interwoven narrative by three artists who, using BRUSK as their starting point, explore the idea of “in-between”, allowing your gaze to slow and your attention to focus on ever-changing aspects of the experience of connection, of being in-between, in BRUSK.

BRUSK
BRUSK is the new art gallery for temporary exhibitions within Musea Brugge. It is an expressive new building designed by Robbrecht and Daem architects in collaboration with Olivier Salens architects. The extensive building is never out of proportion: the gigantic skylights that provide the exhibition rooms with northern light are angled in such a way that they are only visible from the ground in certain places. The different scales of the city are reflected in the precise detailing of the columns, floating corridor and roof edges. In this way, the building fits in between the existing small houses and the Groeninge Museum. A passageway runs through the museum, connecting the various gardens on the site and orienting the museum towards the towers of Bruges with beautiful views. BRUSK was completed in 2025 and will host its first major exhibition in May 2026.
