Trip

Basel & Weil am Rhein

The unbearable lightness of architecture
11.05 15.05 1994
Zürich, Basel, Weil-am-Rein...
Switzerland

By the fruitful collaboration of talented architects, sensitized clients engaged politicians, interested officials and critical media, a cultural climate arose in a region which proved to be a fertile ground for good architecture.

Through fruitful cooperation of talented architects, sensitized clients engaged politicians, interested officials and critical media, created a cultural climate in a region which proved to be fertile ground for good architecture.

In the 70-80 years developed in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland Ticino a dynamic process of architektuurkultuur. You will remember the journey in 1990, which gave an overview of how a region is profiled with architecture. In Ticino, this process today passed its peak. There is fatigue, predictability, sometimes caricatured repetition.

The architektuurdynamiek has meanwhile shifted to Switzerland to the German speaking regions where a new generation of architects takes away from some fashionable formal excesses and inspired and fascinated by the early modernism, went looking for the expression of the essential. Some of them, such as Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have meanwhile gained international fame. Others work certainly deserves more attention. Architects like Diener and Diener, Furrez & Fasnacht, Studer & Studer, Gmür, Nissen, and furz Baader … Santiago Calatrava is a maverick in the row and walks totally different, previously on-Swiss, roads …

Just over the border, there is the inevitable Weil am Rein with the, now famous worldwide, the initiative of the furniture manufacturer to architects like Gehry, Zada Hadid, Tadao Ando and Grimshaw gave orders.

Tour guides: Wim Supply, Jan Vande Walle, Ivo Demeyer & Alexander Lievens.
