Opened in 2011, the Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre set a new standard for architecture in Iceland. It was designed by Henning Larsen Architects and Batteríið Architects.
The spectacular south facade consists of a three-dimensional steel and glass structure and bears the signature of the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. As the way in which the sunlight is incident, the building thereby changes color. Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre is part of the East Harbour urban development project, designed to rejuvenate the eastern harbor area of the city and connect to the city center. This HARPA building received the Mies van der Rohe prize in 2013 and will be explained in detail by architect Sigurður Einarsson of Batteríið Architects.
This presentation will be preceded by a situation of Icelandic architecture – how it evolved through the past decades – by the Icelandic architect-critic Pétur H. Ármannsson
This lecture is part of Nordic Architecture on Tour and is an organization of the Icelandic Embassy in collaboration with Archipel.
The full range of Nordic Architecture on Tour is initiated and coordinated by the Nordic cultural institutes and embassies in Belgium: the Danish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux and the embassies of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
Five Nordic countries are represented in five Belgian towns, with a final event in the CIVA Brussels on 12-13 December!
