Filtering Fabric

A network of water purification
Gilles Lewyllie, Goele van den Ouweland, Ilse Hoste, Pauline Liephout

In a region where water is becoming increasingly scarce and vulnerable, we aim to shape a landscape that actively contributes to water purification, not as an afterthought, but as an inherent part of its ecological and social structure.

We design space as a guiding network through which water can seep, slow down, infiltrate, and recover. This happens through a layered system rooted in natural processes: from open agricultural mosaics that allow infiltration, to buffer zones and helophyte fields that purify, and lowered areas that serve as temporary storage and filters. The spatial strategy shifts away from technical, maintenance-intensive interventions toward regenerative models that sustain themselves.

Instead of diverting water, we capture it, hold it, purify it, and reuse it, following an implicit hierarchy of prevention, delay, purification, and reuse. At the same time, we focus on coherence between upstream and downstream and between industry, agriculture, and residential use. Each area contributes according to its capacity. This creates a system of reciprocity, where the land not only accommodates water but actively takes care of it.

This vision transcends boundaries, both administrative and ecological and invites coexistence: between people and landscape, between production and preservation, between the future and the present
