Get home safe

The (played) game
Tine Pillaert

‘Safe home!’ – ‘Bonne route!’ – ‘Veilig thuis!’ is a spatial game that invites us to think critically about our public spaces and how we shape them together. It is approached from an intersectional feminist perspective, focusing on how different experiences and power dynamics determine who feels welcome, free or safe in a space, and who does not. From this perspective, the game raises questions about who is given space in the public sphere and who is (un)consciously excluded.

Although safety is an important starting point, the game goes beyond simply the feeling of safety. It is a thought experiment that encourages players to reflect on the way we live together and organise our spaces today. When and where do we feel safe and able to move freely? When do we not? Which spatial, architectural or social elements play a role in this? And can small interventions in the space contribute to a greater sense of safety and comfort?

The game brings players together to reflect on these issues collectively and engage in dialogue. Its playful nature creates an accessible setting in which personal experiences can be shared and different perspectives come together.
