Towards a climate union

The geography of the Rhine watershed, a new form of metropolis
Aymeric Bey, Gaël Biache, Alice Brigand, Téo Nicolas, Elise Dalmasso, Joris LeCalvez, Tom Coutant

This project presents a collective vision of a future where the climate is at the heart of political concerns. We propose to set up a Climate Union at the European level, which will make it possible to place environmental issues at the centre of territorial projects. It allows us to link the different climatic regions and create interdependencies between them.

We use the Rhine river watershed as a test case to explore the impact of the Climate Union on the territory. The apprehension of the river as well as its understanding was done via geographical tools in order to put in resonance two visions of the same territory. Our analyses enabled us to understand the territory from a European scale down to the scale of the Rhine river watershed itself.

The geographical vision that we seek to put forward is close to a bioregionalist vision. This perspective emphasises forms that respond to one another, like the districts of a geographical metropolis; one cannot exist without the others, and their identities confront and complement each other. This led us to ask: what would be the impact on the territory of a metropolis turned around the Rhine river watershed?
