The Wild West
This spring Archipel travels again, not to an exotic destination such as Chandigarh or Naoshima, but to the Flemish hinterland where the names of the hamlets are vaguely familiar and the track of cycling tourists leads.
The trip, from bus to place with camera, sketch book and valies in hand, makes a double this year. In true colonial style, we shared Flanders through a north-south axis. The Wild West (West, East Flanders and part of Flemish Brabant) will take place from 24 to 28 May, The Far East (the other part of Flemish Brabant and the provinces of Limburg, Antwerp) we will discover in the autumn holidays. The metropolitan areas of Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp are stored for a later edition.
Archipel was challenged to formulate a varied program that was penetrated by the Poetry of Everydayhood and found in Flanders both classics and realizations of the newest generation of architects. We visit the unique 50s reflection center Virgo Fidelis of architect Arthur Degeyter and the town hall of Gino De Bruyn architects in Torhout or the art academy in Lokeren (Plus office and engineering agency UTIL). The relationship with the outside environment is a recurring theme; Taste of the gentleness in the cultural center in Jonkershove of Rapp + Rapp or the kordate seclusion at Dom Hans van der Laan in the Abbey of Roosenberg and the vast landscape of the Bel Architecten’s water tower. In addition to the award-winning elementary school The Springboard of Studio Thys Vermeulen i.s.m. Carton123 in Bruges, we also see the formation center in Destelheide, where we experience the reaction of Over-building on the Paul Felix youth tourism campus youth campus. You can also expect this time on the archipelago signature of unexpected projects, exceptional explanations by designer or builder and vré manner supervisors.
Archipel chose architectural quality ho(s)tels as a guesthouse, with a nice location in the most beautiful cities of Flanders. These overnight stays allow us to cross the level of the curious passenger and experience some buildings as a user.
To increase the reach of our travels to a younger audience, Archipelago offers for the two-way Flemish roads, in addition to the known formula, a youth hostel variant. In addition to the economic benefits, this is also a unique reason to stay in the youth hostel Groeninghe of URA and the Ghent hostel De Draeke. And if you sign up with a group of friends, you can book one of the rooms up to 4 beds. Participants who prefer the usual formula stay in one or double rooms with welness in the Art-Deco hotel Orion in the Miljoenkwartier in Ghent and the D-hotel in Marke (Kortrijk).
Do not be put off by the seemingly multipurpose path of a regional architecture trip, we take you on a unique experience, a dérive through the buildings, the gardens and the roads of the Flemish Land.
