The office of dierendonckblancke architects is located in Ghent since 1999, and was founded by Alexander Dierendonck and Isabelle Blancke. After graduating from the Sint-Lucas Institute for Higher Learning, they bote worked at various architecture firms in Paris.
The firm’s approach to design could be described as “no nonsense”. The starting point for the design is always the program of requirements, with its various paraeters and restrictions. There is no preset attitude, so it is never said that we are going to tackle a project like this or like that. No mannerism, no desire to create anything that doesn not ste fromt he preconditions of design. This leads to a design method in which the building is first marked out schematically and organisationally and where, by constant feedback, its materializtion and the constructional aspects are then developed. We see a building as a machine, where function prevails over everything else. This is the only way that an architect can adequately respond to the changing parameters of society. The poetry of architecture is only created after the regeneration of the obvious pre-existing conditions, into a building that can be built durably and used logically.
