Karljosef Schattner

Karljosef Schattner (°Gommern, August 24, 1924 – †Eichstätt, 10 April, 2012) was a German architect.

As head of the diocesan and from 1972 also the University Construction Office in Eichstätt he coined over three decades the image of the city with its renovations and additions in the portfolio, “determined by the clear and sensitive harmony between old and new”, and set the tone in architecture.

Schattner attended from 1934 to 1942 the high school in Magdeburg. 1942 drafted into military service, he returned in 1945 back with a life-threatening injury from the Baltic States and was interned in US POW camp in the military hospital Ingolstadt. From 1946 to 1949 he completed a commercial apprenticeship in Gommern and married after his move to Eichstätt Irmingard Ried. In 1949 he began studying architecture at the Technical University Munich in Hans Döllgast, Martin Elsaesser, Franz Hart, Friedrich Krauss and Georg Werner. After graduating in 1953 he worked in Munich architects Franz Hart. After working in an office Ingolstadt 1955/1956 he was from 1956 to 1957 independent architect in Eichstätt.

In 1957 he became head of the Diocesan Building Authority in Eichstatt and from 1972 on also the management of the University Building Authority of the Catholic University of Eichstaett. Schattner was from 1985 to 1994 honorary professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt and 1989-1991 Visiting Professor at the ETH Zurich.
